Pop-up marijuana events coming to town?

New marijuana events are unlike the public Farmers’ Markets that have been shut down in the past few years: these events are underground, like raves of yesteryear. Through effective use of email, Instagram, Eventbrite (for ticket sales), word-of-mouth, and good old-fashioned networking, these pop-up events are attracting crowds and offer both public sale and consumption.

TerpWars is one such pop-up event, following events like the 805 Oilerfest that took place in Santa Maria in August (and now planning a December 19th event in Los Angeles), and other events held by Popupsesh, and We should smoke in cities across CA, from Sacramento to South Bay.
TerpWars’ inaugural event was held on November 14th, with a competition, party, and an expo. The location was announced only on the day of the event.
TerpWars attracted about 40 partners/vendors, and organizers estimated over 1,000 people in attendance. We saw at least that many people. The event was held in a warehouse space in Van Nuys, with a haze of sweet smoke filling the upper half of the warehouse. Vendors sold accessories, cool swag, infused edibles and liquids, and flower, and everybody sampled concentrates, with some vendors offering free hits with a gram purchase or serving up dabs at $1-2 each.

Dollar Dabs

TerpWars organizers are not convinced any laws are being violated, because they are restricting access to people with CA medical recommendations (RECs). “Everyone with a REC is allowed to purchase and consume marijuana.” They made a genuine attempt to review everyone’s REC cards and IDs at the entrance, even though a few vendors were selling product outside the secured (medical-only) area. Unfortunately, there is no law in either LA County or California that allows public sale and consumption events to take place.
But this legality isn’t deterring the organizers from expanding to other states that have an MMJ program – TerpWars’ next stop is a private mansion party in Vegas this Saturday, at a location to be announced, once-again, on the same day.
